How scouting works
  1. Find a good site before the crowd does. Hurrbee reads every site it crawls and gives it a Trust Authority (TA) from 0 to 100 — how much it actually says, whether it’s buried in ads, whether someone put their name to it. The best finds have a high TA and few sites linking to them yet.
  2. Squat on it with honey. The price depends on how many other sites already link to it. A site almost nobody links to costs 500 honey; a few hundred links, 1,500; thousands, about 10,000; the web’s giants, millions. A site our crawler has never seen is half price — and its score counts half again.
  3. Your score is fixed on the day you squat. It’s the site’s TA, reduced by how well known it already was. Example: a site with TA 72 and 3 sites linking to it costs 500 honey and scores 68. The same site with 2,000 links would cost 9,999 and score 44. If the site takes off later, your score stays — you called it early.
  4. Keep it through winter. Once a year, after 1 April, some squats are lost to winter. Your first winter is free; after that you can pay to winterize. Every winter survived raises your score.
Try it: how a hive grows

A squat is a hive you set on a domain. As other sites start linking to it, your hive grows and your name climbs the board. Drag the ruler to see what growth does for your handle, and what winter and other beekeepers can do to your hive.

How much has the domain grown?
The gold mark is where it stood the day you set your hive.
Fewer links means a cheaper hive and a bigger score for spotting it early.
What kind of site did you pick? Trust 72
HurrbeeBot grades every site it reads. Your score uses the grade on the day you set the hive, so it stays fixed.

Your score was set the day you squatted. Growth does not change it; growth moves you up the board.

Fastest growing hives this monthExample board

Keepers at the top of this board are intelligent and generous and maybe a little lucky: they spot good sites before anyone else, and they can give their prize honey to the bee charity.

    Growth: your standing

The board ranks hives by links gained since they were set. Bigger gains move your handle up.

    Monthly prize

On the 1st, the keepers of the 100 fastest-growing hives win honey. Keep it for new hives or give it to the bee charity in your name. It is for squatting only and cannot be cashed out.

    Keepers' council

Each week the keeper of the fastest-growing hive wins a vote: move one point of Hurrbee's honey from one place to another, such as the bee charity, the reserve, members' honey, the HurrbeeBot network, Hurrbee's upkeep or referrals. As Hurrbee grows, more keepers win each week. Every share has limits, so no vote can empty the reserve.

Your handle then carries a title for how you vote, like @yourhandle · The Kind. Pick either name:

    • Charity: The Kind / The Generous
    • Reserve: The Steward / The Keeper
    • Members' honey: The Provider / The Nurse
    • HurrbeeBot: The Forager / The Explorer
    • Upkeep: The Builder / The Architect
    • Referrals: The Herald / The Dancer
    • Ad referrals: The Merchant / The Pollinator
    • A bit of everything: The Wise / The Sage

    Winter

From 1 April, every hive has a 21–38% chance of dying, the real range of US honeybee winter losses. Your first winter is free. Winterizing cuts the risk; a hive that survives adds 25% to its score.

    Other beekeepers

Anyone can take your hive by paying twice what you paid. You get 75% back and 14 days to take it back first. Winterizing does not stop a takeover.

Prices, score, winter and takeovers follow the live rules. Hive stages, badges and the monthly prize are coming soon.

Scouting is a game. You spend honey to put your name beside a domain you think deserves noticing, and part of what you spend goes to pollinator conservation.

Every squat here is someone saying this one is worth noticing. The score rewards obscurity — a domain nobody had cataloged counts for more than one everybody knows — and it grows with each winter a hive comes through. Pointing us at something Hurrbee had never crawled is worth half again as much.

This ranks squats, not people. A good eye counts for more than a long list. Honey spent on a squat is forfeit — it buys a place on this page and nothing else.

TA is Trust Authority, our measure of a domain, from 0 to 100. It is computed by the crawler and nobody can buy it — squatting on a domain does not move it. Links is how many different sites Hurrbee has found linking to the domain on the day it was squatted, and now; the board is ordered by the gain.

    Still out there

High-quality sites hardly anyone links to yet — 500 honey each, and the best scores on the board if you are right about them. Universities and government sites are left out.

Squatting spends honey you do not get back. What you get is the record and your standing as a scout. A squat is not an investment and gives no ownership of, license to, or interest in the domain or the site it points at. Hurrbee claims nothing over these domains and neither do the people listed here; the site owners are not involved and have not agreed to anything.
